First Generation Students at Ohio State

As first generation college students, we strive to make the transition for high school students to college a smooth and informed experience. We will provide opportunities for our members to make their futures successful and therefore raise the retention for first generation students at The Ohio State University. Students who are not first-generation but want to participate are also welcome! Buckeyes for Appalachia

Ohio's Appalachian region is a diverse and unique region which has historically faced severe economic challenges. Many students from Appalachia are first-generation college students, and many are from small, rural communities. Students who are first-generation college students often face additional challenges adjusting to college life, as family does not share "what to expect" at college. This group will provide opportunities to have fun while give back to Appalachian communities through several means, including inspiring Appalachian middle and high school students to take the steps necessary to reach higher education. This group will also combat the negative stereotypes that exist about Appalachian communities by fun and effective outreach to the campus community. Senior to Senior

Help qualified high school students make their college dreams a reality--serve as a Senior to Senior mentor! As a Senior to Senior mentor through the Economic Access Initiative, you will visit nearby Franklin Heights High School with other Ohio State students to help junior or senior students navigate the college application process. College Mentors for Kids

College Mentors for Kids pairs first- through eighth-grade children with local college student mentors. College Mentors has more than 1,500 college volunteers who mentor more than 1,300 kids in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.   Through weekly after-school activities, mentors help their "Little Buddies" understand higher education opportunities, as well as the importance of self-reliance, self-confidence, taking initiative at school, and making wise academic and social choices.  Mentoring relationships are beneficial for both college students and children. Mentors learn about the resources their campus has to offer, leadership skills and the need for positive role models in their communities. Children not only learn by interacting with their mentors, but also by participating in activities that foster community and empowerment.

First Generation Buckeye Leadership Connection

Apply to be a student facilitator at the FGBLC 2012!

The First Generation Buckeye Leadership Connection is a two-day (Friday-Saturday) leadership workshop over the summer for incoming OSU Freshmen who are first generation college students.  Students learn networking, resume and interviewing skills, as well as how to utilize their own strengths within a team.   The FGBLC will teach students how to talk to professors, engage them with first generation OSU faculty and community leaders, and network with their fellow students and others at the University who can help them achieve their goals and dreams throughout their college experience and beyond.  This event molds students into young professionals who are poised to make a difference at Ohio State and in the communities they live and work in after college.  Second year and above students may apply to be on the planning committee and/or to be a student facilitator for the FGBLC.  These are volunteer positions and include housing for the night, all meals, and the chance to meet some really great campus and community leaders, new students, and helps you build your leadership skills!  Email economicaccess@osu.edu for more info.  The event will take place in July 2012.  Applications will be sent out beginning Winter Quarter.
