Holbrook Lays Out Goals As OSU’s 13th
President
Campus was hopping this month as university officials and other
well-wishers came to a July 25 press conference to announce the
selection of Karen A. Holbrook as the 13th president of The Ohio
State University. In remarks at the announcement, the new president
laid out some of her thoughts about the future of the institution:
“As president, I will be particularly interested in:
- fostering multi-disciplinary programs, including and extending
beyond science;
- emphasizing outreach via pre-collegiate programs to broaden
the pipeline for student who need to see OSU as a goal: those
who are the best students and those who are under-served;
- providing focused support for a select group of programs poised
for excellence;
- continuing to enhance the undergraduate experience in today’s
context of student engagement and intentional learners with innovative
programs that capitalize on the richness of the research environment;
- emphasizing the continuity of education over a lifetime; not
education in separate, disjointed units;
- assuring that the faculty award structure is aligned with institutional
goals and values; and
- encouraging more and more of our resources to be self-earned.”

Owens Foundation Establishes Scholars Program
In honor of the values and tradition of the legendary Jesse Owens,
his family and foundation are establishing the Jesse Owens Endowed
Scholarship Fund and scholars program at Ohio State. Providing scholarships
to students who are socio-economically disadvantaged, awards will
based not just on financial need, but on each recipient’s
demonstrated community service and leadership during high school
or college. Plans for the program include mentoring opportunities,
lunch and dinner speakers, lectures by athletes and minority leaders,
and internships with selected corporations. The Jesse Owens Foundation
has chosen educational programs and scholarships as its major vehicles
for creating a living memorial to Jesse, in part because of his
own reliance on financial aid as an Ohio State student. READ
