Plans underway to improve High Street
A public open house was held recently to reveal and discuss plans to improve the High Street streetscape from 11th to Lane Avenues, the "Main Street" that borders the east side of campus. The study
looks at improvements to the sidewalks, street trees, street lights, signage, street furniture, etc. You can view the presentation by MSI Planners and other plans for the campus at http://www.fpd.ohio-state.edu/?segue=MP.

History professor wins National Book Award
Kevin Boyle, professor of history, has won the National Book Award for nonfiction, the National Book Award Foundation has announced. The Foundation described his book, Arc of Justice: A Saga of
Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age, as a “history that is at once an intense courtroom drama, a moving biography, and an engrossing look at race in America in the early 20th century.”

Bucks selected to play in 2004 Alamo Bowl
Ohio State has accepted an invitation to be the Big Ten representative in the 2004 MasterCard Alamo Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 8 p.m. in San Antonio’s 65,000-seat Alamodome. Ohio State (7-4 overall
and 4-4 in the Big Ten), who upset No. 7 Michigan 37-21 in Columbus last month, will be making its first bowl trip to San Antonio. The trip to Texas will be Ohio State’s 36th bowl trip and fifth

Merritt will deliver commencement address
Deborah Jones Merritt, director of the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at Ohio State, will deliver the autumn quarter commencement address Dec. 12 at St. John Arena.
Approximately 1,900 degrees will be awarded at the ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m. In addition to directing the institute, Merritt holds the John Deaver Drinko/Baker and Hostetler Chair in Law

OSU, Battelle cement collaboration with MOU
The Ohio State University and Battelle Memorial Institute signed an official memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance the strong collaboration between one of the nation’s premier research
institutions and one of the world’s largest independent research and development organizations. In signing the MOU, President Holbrook and Battelle President and CEO Carl F. Kohrt declared
their intent to leverage their institutions’ strengths to expand and enhance the nature and scope of future collaborations.

Holbrook presents update on Leadership Agenda
President Holbrook spoke to the University Senate last month about her Leadership Agenda, which provides the specific priorities under the Academic Plan for action and resource allocation, guided by consultation
with academic, administrative, faculty, staff and student leadership. “Our overarching goal, as identified in the Academic Plan, is to be one of the world’s truly great research universities. That
goal will be reached only by prioritizing our actions and focusing on those that are most likely to improve our reputation and our performance in the context of fiscal responsibility,” Holbrook said.

OSU observes polar explorer’s famous flight
Ohio State celebrated the anniversary of a major scientific and exploratory accomplishment — a commemoration of the first manned flight over the South Pole. The event, which occurred Nov. 29, 1929,
was one of the many advances in polar science shepherded by Admiral Richard E. Byrd, the namesake of Ohio State’s Byrd Polar Research Center (BPRC). Admiral Byrd’s papers that document his expeditions
and life are maintained in a collection at Ohio State. Housed in the University Archives on campus, they are the largest and most frequently consulted collection in the Polar Archival Program, a
collaborative venture of the OSU Libraries and the Byrd Polar Research Center. READ MORE >

Increases in patient admissions, live births and surgeries have contributed to growth at the Ohio State University Health System. These factors led to a $6.5 million operating gain and an increase
of $14.1 million in net assets for the fiscal year-end June 30, 2004. This positive momentum occurred simultaneously with a continued significant investment in research, education and the recruitment

James pain expert awarded St. George Medal
Costantino Benedetti, an expert in pain and palliative medicine at the James Cancer Hospital, has received the St. George Medal from the American Cancer Society (ACS). The St. George Medal is
the most prestigious award the ACS can give to a division volunteer. Benedetti has spent much of his career nurturing and promoting new and more effective therapies for pain control. He created
and directs the Arthur G. James/American Cancer Society Pain and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Ohio State.
