Featuring 600,000 square feet of fitness space, including athletic courts, pools, spa facilities, and cafés, Ohio State's Recreation & Physical Activity Center— RPAC— is scheduled to open in phases beginning this summer.

Opportunity knocks for Ohio students

On May 15, President Holbrook awarded this year's Land Grant Opportunity Scholarships to high-ability students from every county in Ohio. The scholarships are designed to offer more low-income, high-ability students a chance to go to college. The university has committed to spend nearly $1.5 million this year on the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarships, so named because of Ohio State’s status as a land-grant university and its mission to remain accessible to Ohio citizens. Ohio State attracts major research funding

Ohio State researchers will share more than $36 million in grants to develop innovations in agriculture, engineering, and medicine from Ohio's Third Frontier Project. The university received funding for two of the three Wright Centers for Innovation projects, which support large-scale, world-class research and technology development, along with one of four Biomedical Research and Technology Transfer Partnerships. The grants include:

  • $22.5 million to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering to create the Ohio Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices to develop new materials to improve the strength and durability of automobile components.
  • $11.6 million to the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences to fund the creation of the Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center a partnership between Ohio State, Battelle, and other business collaborators, to develop chemical conversion technologies to produce products such as lubricants and adhesives from Ohio-grown raw materials.
  • $4.25 million to develop and commercialize immune-system therapies to delay and control the onset of multiple sclerosis.

University presents new visual identity and homepage

Two initiatives led by the Office of University Relations launched in May: (1) the Visual Identity Guidelines, which provide information and tools for communicators to contribute to a more consistent identity for the university; and (2) a new system of front door Web pages that reflects new minimal design elements and more timely and tailored news, features, and links.

Online pharmacy program earns kudos

The Non-Traditional PharmD Program, the first online degree-granting program at Ohio State, was recently awarded the 2005 Distance Education Award of Excellence by the American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) in New Orleans. The program offers licensed, practicing pharmacists an opportunity to earn their Doctor of Pharmacy degree in an online format. READ MORE >

Holbrook named to international board

President Karen Holbrook has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Institute of International Education (IEE), a nonprofit educational and cultural exchange organization. Founded in 1919, the IIE is the world's most experienced global higher education and professional exchange organization with a network of 19 offices worldwide and more than 850 college and university members. Professor honored by American Chemical Society

Bruce Bursten

Bruce Bursten, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Chemistry, received the 2005 Morley Medal from the Cleveland section of the American Chemical Society. The annual award recognizes outstanding contributions to chemistry through achievements primarily in research, but also for important contributions in teaching, engineering, industrial progress, administration, public service, or service to humanity. Bursten's research in inorganic chemistry focuses on the bonding and reactivity of metal-containing molecules.

Academy elects emeritus prof as 2005 Fellow

John P. Hirth, emeritus professor of engineering at Ohio State, has been elected to the class of 2005 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which recently announced the election of 196 new Fellows and 17 new Foreign Honorary Members. Currently at Washington State University, Hirth is one of the world's pre-eminent materials scientists and is known for his expertise of the behavior of materials at atomic and microstructural levels. Interim director named for Glenn Institute

Lawrence Libby, holder of the C. William Swank Chair in Rural-Urban Policy and professor in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics, has been named interim director of the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, his appointment will be effective on July 1. READ MORE >

Hot spots scheduled for Gateway opening

Campus Partners announced the lineup of restaurants and shops that will open August 1 in the South Campus Gateway, including Eddie George's Grille 27, a sports-theme restaurant to be opened by Eddie George, former Ohio State running back and Heisman winner. Other tenants will include:

Drexel Gateway Theatre (eight screens)
The Skye Bar (dance and live music)

Baseball team wins Big Ten title

Baseball team clinches Big Ten title

Ohio State posted a 14-6 victory over Minnesota to win the seventh Big Ten tournament championship in school history. The win sends the Buckeyes, winners of 19 of its last 22 games and 39-18 for the season, to the NCAA tournament for the 17th time in the history of the program and the 11th time under 18th-year head coach Bob Todd. First annual writing contest for alumni

Ohio State's literary magazine, The Journal, is sponsoring an "Alumni Flash Prose Writing Contest," open only to Ohio State grads. "Flash" submissions—works under 1,000 words—can be fiction or nonfiction. The contest offers $500 prize and publication in The Journal's Spring/Summer 2006 issue.
