Restoration of Cooke Castle began in 1998 with the replacement of a roof and repair and replacement of windows. The roof is constructed of steel sheeting and is consistent with a roof which would have been on a similar structure in the 1860s. Although most windows were found to be in remarkably good shape, some panes needed to be replaced as was the wood framing. Where panes were needed they were of a special composition and imported from France.

Removed at the time was an observation dome on top of the tower. This observatory was added, probably in the 1940s, for educational programs but has not been in use for many years. By removing the structure the tower is now accessible for a breath taking view of the lake and Put-in-Bay. One can almost imagine Jay Cooke in the tower welcoming notables such as Chief Justice Salmon Chase to his island home. The tower was the site of a flag pole which supported a large United States flag.

Mortar work will be completed during the summer months of 2000 which will complete the protection program of the house envelop. The interior is next. An adaptive reuse study is scheduled for late 1999 and early 2000. When plans are complete funds will be sought to support the rehabilitation and restoration of the interior. It is likely the building will be used as a conference and education center for University programs at the island.
