Do Something Great

Dr. Tammy Bray

Professor
Department of Human Nutrition and Food Management
College of Human Ecology

The incidence of Type I diabetes growing in our population. To combat this trend, Ohio State's Dr. Tammy Bray is researching strategies for stopping this disease before it starts. She's doing it with a revolutionary new approach to protecting health and preventing disease. It's rooted in the discovery of the role played by antioxidants and oxygen free radicals in health and disease. Antioxidants are chemical compounds found in fruits and vegetables. They have a powerful ability to stamp out damaged molecules in our bodies, which we call oxygen free radicals. We've learned in recent years that free radicals are what cause disease and aging in our bodies. The good news is, antioxidants can stop oxygen free radicals. This new knowledge is as important to our health today as was the discovery of antibiotics and microorganisms in infectious disease in the past.

Dr. Bray's research is expected to contribute significantly to our understanding of how diabetes develops. It will also lead to the development of new food-based medicines that will ensure that no one has to suffer from the debilitating effects of diabetes.
