Buckeye Brilliance: New Ohio Union honors history of innovation

With its unique meeting spaces, state of the art technology, and environmentally friendly construction and operations, the new Ohio Union is the epitome of innovation and future-focus. But with a closer look, you can see how the spirit of innovation that led to this cutting-edge facility is just one of many examples of ways Buckeyes and Ohio State have led the way.
Buckeye Brilliance, a display on the third floor of the union, documents the areas of inspiration and innovation from Buckeyes throughout Ohio State’s history. The interactive panels recognize faculty, staff, students and alumni for their contributions while they were on campus and after their time at Ohio State.
“Buckeyes have made a huge impact on the world,” said Tracy Stuck, assistant vice president for student life and director of the Ohio Union. “We hope the display will inspire students to follow their dreams and make a difference in the world around them – wherever that may be.”
Buckeyes highlighted in the display include Charity Earley, the first black woman to be commissioned by the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, Richard Olsen, who developed the vaccine for feline leukemia, and Kenneth A. Harkness, who developed the slow moving vehicle placard.
Stuck noted that maintaining a focus on innovation and recognizing those who are making a difference will help us on our journey from Excellence to Eminence.
“Innovation is one of our core values, and it’s part of who we’ve always been,” she said. “Keeping that spirit alive will help us continue to give back in significant ways to the State of Ohio, and the world.”

While working on the project, Stuck was struck by the depth and breadth of contributions Buckeyes have made over time.
“When you look at the many areas of impact – engineering, the arts, marketing, and the list goes on – it reflects what we can do with our combined power,” Stuck said. “As we continue to move from Excellence to Eminence, we can achieve the unimaginable.”
She encourages everyone to spend some time with Buckeye Brililance when looking for inspiration.
"This display – and the new Ohio Union – is a collaboration that celebrates all that makes Ohio State special,” she said. "Every day I walk into this building, I’m reminded of all the reasons I’m so proud to be a Buckeye.”
