The Short Films of the Quay Brothers
| Event: |
The Short Films of the Quay Brothers Stephen and Timothy Quay are two of the world's most original filmmakers. Identical twins born near Philadelphia in 1947, the brothers moved to London in 1969 and have lived there ever since, creating an astonishing body of work including short films and features, ground-breaking commercials, music videos, and a dazzling array of other commissions and collaborations. This program of short films presents examples from the Quay BrothersŐ more than 30-year career and offers a fantastic warm-up for their in-person appearance on July 31. Influenced by a tradition of Eastern European animation, the Quay Brothers films often combine puppets and stop-motion animation techniques and feature a dazzling use of focus and light to guide the viewer's eye through their hermetic, detail-rich environments. Tonight you'll see their masterpiece Street of Crocodiles (1986), The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer (1984), The Phantom Museum (2003), and more. (program app. 120 mins., 16mm, 35mm, and video) |
