Constructing James Castle--An Urban Arts Space Exhibition Gallery talk and reception: Friday, January 11, 4:30-7:30 pm, Urban Arts Space Screening and panel discussion of James Castle documentary film: Tuesday, January 15, 4-6 pm, Wexner Center Film/Video Theatre Screening of James Castle documentary and gallery tour, Thursday, February 21, 5:30-7 pm, Urban Arts Space This exhibition features more than 100 works by James Castle (1899-1977), a self-trained, deaf artist who spent his life in rural Idaho. Castle portrayed the surroundings and imaginings of his daily life using matchbooks, notebooks, calendars register receipts, twine, grocery cartons, and even soot mixed with his own saliva. The exhibition focuses on works that demonstrate the impact of CastleÕs five-year education at IdahoÕs Gooding School for the Deaf and Blind between 1910 and 1915. |
