Field & Screen 2013: Bestiaire

Field & Screen 2013: Bestiaire Preceded by DonĠt Break Down Introduced by Matt Meindl In this stunning visual essay, a tourist-jammed Quebec safari park is the setting for an almost surrealist meditation on the relationship between nature and humanity. Bestiare is, at its core, a story about looking. Filmmaker Denis Ct eschews the traditional first-person narrative for poetic (and mesmerizingly long) shots of exotic animals both seeing and being seen. A lion attacks its cage. A zebraĠs legs scuffle in a pen. An ostrich gazes into the distance. Through this series of stark tableausÑand scenes both humorous and heartbreakingÑCt slowly explores the primal human desire to observe our fellow creatures...and how that desire is often at odds with the best interests of the creatures weĠre observing.
