Field & Screen: It's the Earth Not the Moon
Field & Screen: It's the Earth Not the Moon |
Director Gonćalo Tocha begins this film with a self-directed challenge. As he approaches the remote Azorean island of Corvo—Europe’s western-most point—Tocha all but dares himself to document every square inch of it.
And document he does. Shot over the span of several years—during which Tocha self-produced the film between arrivals and departures—It’s the Earth Not the Moon examines this isolated, barely accessible spot of land with an anthropologist’s curiosity. Using a handheld technique to absorbing effect, Tocha balances Corvo’s otherworldly landscapes with the everyday activities of its inhabitants, creating a part-anthropological, part-aesthetic conversation about travel, accessibility, and the collision of traditional life with the growing presence of modernity.
