African American Men, Wrongful Convictions, Incarceration…… The Exoneration

“Mass incarceration is one of the most pressing issues facing the African American community today. Inside of the issue of mass incarceration lie the phenomena of wrongful convictions and exoneration. In my presentation I will first provide an overview of mass incarceration as it exists for African American men. Second, I will summarize the data on wrongful conviction and incarceration as it is shaped by race. After this groundwork has been laid, I will use data to explore the nuances of exoneration that intersect with both race and gender. I will conclude by discussing the primary causes of wrongful convictions.”
