Father John Misty

Event: Father John Misty

“He confidently establishes himself here… every bit a match for the brightest moments of Fleet Foxes.”—Under the Radar

After departing from Fleet Foxes, Josh Tillman sought a change of scenery and relocated to LA to reenergize his solo career (he had previously released several well-regarded albums as J. Tillman) and came up aces with Fear Fun, his excellent debut Sub Pop release under the moniker Father John Misty last year. Fear Fun, produced by Jonathan Wilson a leading light in the resurgent Laurel Canyon scene, frames Tillman’s haunting yet clear voice and lyrics that evoke the dark side of the California dream with exquisitely rendered country rock underpinnings. Uncut praised its “sardonic, self-effacing songs that recall the finest traditions of harmony-soaked West Coast folk-and-country influenced rock'n'roll” while PopMatters added, “Every track on Fear Fun is laced with its own unique, original, and intriguing charm. Ultimately, it’ll be hard to find a more awe-inspiring album this year than Fear Fun.”

Cleveland-based singer/songwriter Bill Fox, a major influence on Guided by Voices and other leaders of Ohio’s indie rock scene, opens the show. The Believer calls him “one of America’s greatest songwriters.”
