STEM Initiatives Virtual Brown Bag Series: "Nurturing College Readiness among Ohio’s Diverse Youth"

Event: STEM Initiatives Virtual Brown Bag Series: "Nurturing College Readiness among Ohio’s Diverse Youth"
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion advances academic excellence at Ohio State by increasing participation and advocating for the success of underrepresented students. This presentation will focus on three pre-collegiate outreach programs. The Young Scholars Program identifies academically talented, first-generation, prospective college students from the state’s nine major metropolitan areas and supports their academic development from the 6th grade through high school graduation. ODI’s Leadership Initiatives for Women of Color will support a STEM club for middle school girls at Columbus City Preparatory School for Girls, including monthly hands-on, interactive presentations from faculty across STEM disciplines and concluding with a daylong Science Summit. LASER matches Latino high school students with college student mentors to support college readiness.

Curtis J. Austin is Director of the Young Scholars Program which annually serves hundreds of academically talented first generation college students from economically challenged backgrounds. He is a leading scholar on the black freedom movement.
Victoria Dunn directs Leadership Initiatives for Women of Color which provides an array of educational and motivational programs including the annual Women of Color Leadership Retreat and P.E.A.C.E. Corps Peer Leaders.

As assistant provost for diversity and inclusion, Yolanda Zepeda oversees programs for single parent students, women of color, LGBTQ and Latina and Latino students.
