Michel Groisman performing Transference/Transferencia

Event: Michel Groisman performing Transference/Transferencia
Brazilian action artists Michel Groisman's unique solo works bridge the sculptural with live art practices. They evoke ritualistic traditions like those of Brazilian candomble (an Afro-Brazilian religious practice of calling forth the spirits) as well as the thrust of forward thinking invention that characterizes the art scene in Brazil today. By devising wearable apparatuses and sculpting his body to test the endurance and nature of the human form, Groisman's mysterious performances bring you into the intimate realms he summons with minimalist means that soon expand to take on larger meanings. Groisman appears with medieval-looking devices strapped to his arms and legs as he contorts his body into various shapes like a living sculpture. Attached to each binding leather strap is a long white candle that he lights, then moves with him as he bends and twists to transfer the flame from candle to candle around his body in an elemental ritual of fire and breath.
