Recent observations reveal that the dynamics of large glaciers and ice sheets can change substantially on much faster timescales than previously believed. We will review the rapid, ongoing changes in the dynamics of the great ice masses, and particularly the Greenland Ice Sheet, and assess the possible mechanisms and climate forces driving those changes. We will examine how small-scale instabilities at ice-ocean boundary and subglacial hydrology can be amplified into large changes in flow-speed and ice thickness on short time-scales. We will also examine the recent climate changes that may have triggered ice sheet's response and assess the potential for continued ice sheet collapse.
