the second annual Dr. William E. Nelson, Jr. Community Awards Luncheon |
Extension Center (AAASCEC) will host the second annual Dr. William E. Nelson, Jr. Community Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in Performance Hall at the OSU Ohio Union, 1739 N. High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43210.
The luncheon is an opportunity to pay homage to Dr. Nelson, highlight the programming that takes place at the Community Extension Center and recognize individuals who have mirrored Dr. Nelson’s “warrior spirit” by making a significant contribution to the betterment of the community. Those being honored are Jordan A. Miller, President and CEO, Fifth Third Bank; Carole D. Moyer, National Board Certified Teacher, Columbus City Schools; and Ann B. Walker, Community Activist.
Dr. Nelson retired from OSU in 2009 after 40 years of service. Among his many accolades, Dr. Nelson served as chair of the OSU Department of Black Studies from1972 to 1986, the Arts and Sciences Faculty Senate as well as spearheaded the founding of the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center. Dr. Nelson also served as President of the National Council for Black Studies and the Columbus Chapter of the Ohio Black Political Assembly. His impact as a scholar-activist is measured by the many students dispersed throughout the community and the country whom he mentored over the course of a lengthy career at OSU.
Monies raised through the luncheon will be used to support the Summer Residential Program, a college preparatory initiative developed by the AAASCEC created in 1999. The program focuses on educating high school juniors and seniors in the areas of African American and African history and increasing their critical thinking skills, analytical aptitude and technological proficiency, while introducing them to life on a college campus.
