Orton Hall Chimes rededicated

placing the new bells in Orton Tower

The bells of Orton Hall, one of the most familiar of sounds on Ohio State's campus, were rededicated with new bells last month in a ceremony marked by speeches from President Karen Holbrook and Alumni Association President Dan L. Heinlen, as well as a presentation of colors by the OSU Reserve Officers Training Corps and the national anthem performed by the Navy ROTC Choir. The original chimes were a gift of the Ohio State classes of 1906 through 1914 and were dedicated in 1915. The existing bells, which play in the key of D flat, weigh 25,000 pounds. The new bells, which will play the notes of G sharp and A sharp, will expand the bells' repetoire, with songs such as Across the Field and Buckeye Battle Cry now able to ring out across the Oval.
