January 25

Unspeakable Things Spoken, 7 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Raymond Winbush, psychologist and director of the Institute on Urban Research at Morgan State University, will lead a discussion of the African American student experience at Ohio State.

February 2

“Eight Wheels & Some Soul 'Brotha' Music,” 5 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Ohio State graduate students produced and will present a documentary on the history of roller-skating in the African American community.

February 3

Omarosa Manigault Stallworth, 7 p.m., Ohio Union Ballroom, 1739 N. High St.
An alumna from the hit television show "The Apprentice", Stallworth currently serves as a managing partner for Access America Enterprise Corp., a strategic business planning and consulting service. She gained considerable experience in politics and government relations as the deputy associate director of presidential personnel for President Bill Clinton and as the senior scheduling and advance coordinator to Vice President Al Gore. Prior to both her business and political careers, Stallworth worked as a journalist covering stories ranging from the 1996 Olympic Games to the 1997 Presidential Inaugural. A graduate of Central State University, Stallworth earned her master’s degree from Howard University, where she is currently pursuing her doctorate. The event is free and open to the public.

February 4-5

A Roadmap to Success, The Journey Within, University Plaza Hotel, 3110 Olentangy River Rd;
Ohio State African American male students and university and community leaders will participate in a two-day mentoring retreat. Contact Morris Thomas at (614) 688-8449 for registration information.

February 4-6

Roll Call: Exploring Feminine Rhythms of Wellness, Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave. and the Holiday Inn on the Lane
A three-day health and wellness weekend retreat for women of color. Space is limited and restricted to Ohio State students. Participants must pre-register at the Hale Center at (614) 292-0074.

February 6-7

African American Literature Week, Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
To celebrate the achievements of African Americans in the literary arts, participants will read selected books at the Hale Center and several locations in Columbus as part of the 16th Annual National African American Read-In.

February 7

Sister Series-The Legacy of Black Women, 7 to 9 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
A historical overview of African American women will be discussed.

February 8

Book Discussion by Author Farrah Gray, 6:30 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Farrah Gray, author of “Reallionaire: The Essential Lessons that Took Me From Public Assistance to Millionaire by the Age of 14,” will lead a book discussion followed by a book signing. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and available at KISO Books, 1411 E. Main St.

February 10

Poetry in the Winter, 6:30 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Hosted by legendary Columbus playwright Is Said, this event will feature eight Columbus poets in an open mic setting.

February 11

Celebration of Local Authors, 11 a.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Local authors will read excerpts from their work during a soul food luncheon. Authors also will be available until 5 p.m. to sign their books. Confirmed authors include Joylynn Jossel and Khari Enaharo.

February 12

African American Literature Day & Book Fair, 10 a.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
The day will include a workshop, public forum, book club meeting and book fair. A soul food luncheon featuring national bestselling author Nikki Turner, will begin at 12:30 p.m.

February 15

The Politics of Education: Tolerance and Rejection, Understanding the Somali Community in Columbus, 2 p.m., Ramseyer Hall, 29 W. Woodruff Ave.
Dr. Khadar Bashir-Ali will lead a two-hour workshop on the issues and concerns of Somali immigrants in Columbus.

Buckeye Service Council: Building Unity through Service, 4:30 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Members of the Buckeye Service Council will conduct a roundtable discussion of community improvement ideas and projects.

February 16

An Evening of Art Songs and Spirituals, 7:30 p.m., Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Road
Lyric soprano Janice Chandler-Eteme presents this concert as part of the Presidentís and Provostís Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts series.

February 18

D'Light Lounge -- The Lighthouse for Creative Christian Expression, 7 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
This event will feature an evening of live prose, poetry, and musical expression.

Jazz Ensemble, 8 p.m., Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Road
Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for Ohio State faculty, staff and students, and senior citizens.

Hip-Hop on Ice, 10 p.m., Ohio State Ice Rink, 390 Woody Hayes Dr.
A guest disc jockey will host the ice skating party featuring hip-hop music. Free tickets are available at the Ohio Union second floor information desk, 1739 N. High St. Skate rental is $1.

February 19

Freedom Ride to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, 8 a.m., Cincinnati, Ohio
The trip will include a visit to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and a soul food dinner. Registration and an activity fee are required. Contact: burton.174@osu.edu.

February 21

Rubin Carter - the "Hurricane," 6:30 p.m., Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High St.
Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a championship boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder in 1966, will discuss his 20-year battle for freedom and the racial unrest that erupted nationally.

February 22

Children's Hour, 10 a.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Preschool and elementary school-aged children will learn about African American culture and history through a series of programs.

Leadership is a Part of Success, 7 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Community and university leaders will lead a discussion on personal, academic and professional success for African American male students.

Gospel and Spiritual Ensemble, 8 p.m., Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Road
Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for Ohio State faculty, staff and students, and senior citizens.

February 24

The Demise of the Great White Hope: Race Riots in the aftermath of the Johnson-Jefferies Heavyweight Fight, 5:30 p.m., Multicultural Center, 1739 N. High St.
Columbus State Community College adjunct professor and contributing sports columnist Jessica Johnson will discuss the nationwide race riots that occurred after Jack Johnson defeated Jim Jeffries for the heavyweight crown in 1910.

Comedian Wanda Sykes in Concert, 7:30 p.m., Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St.
Wanda Sykes, who ranks among “Entertainment Weekly's” 25 funniest people in America, will bring her comedy routine to the Ohio State campus for a free concert. Tickets are limited to one per student with a BuckID and will be available Jan. 27 after 5:30 p.m. at the Ohio Union second floor information desk, 1739 N. High St.

February 25

Sixth Annual Black Greek Step Party, 7 p.m., Hitchcock Hall, 2070 Neil Ave.
This event will focus on the tradition and origin of party steps in African culture.

February 26

Get Into Grad School Workshop, 10 a.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
A workshop designed to assist Ohio State sophomores and juniors on graduate school admission requirements.

Cooking Afrikan Style, noon, Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Learn how to prepare traditional dishes from selected regions in Africa.

Artists United for the Arts, 3 p.m. Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Workshop leaders will help participants identify and development their artistic talents.

March 3

Students can purchase $3 discounts tickets to view this exhibition of contemporary African stone sculptures at the Franklin Park Conservatory, 1777 E. Broad St. Contact: Explore Columbus at (614) 247-5859.

Photographs by African American Photographers of Central Ohio, Bricker Hall, 140 N. Oval Mall and Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Artwork from the collections of local African American photographers will be displayed during the month.

February 4, 11, 18, 25

Soul Food Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.
Local caterers will provide soul food meals for faculty, staff and students every Friday throughout February. Menu items and prices will be listed at http://oma.osu.edu/hale/ seven days in advance. Paid reservations are required the Wednesday prior to each luncheon.
