For an Ohio State basketball team to win (or even share) a regular season conference title in the always-tough Big Ten, it's a big deal. For both the men's and women's team to win outright titles in the same year? Never happened before...until now.
With a 76-57 victory over Purdue Sunday, Ohio State's men's team joined our women's squad (who claimed the regular season title at Penn State last week) as outright 2006 Big Ten champs—the first time a Big Ten school has captured outright titles in men's and women's basketball in the same season. This season's title is the women's first outright championship since 1986, and men's first outright title since 1992.
In front of a home court sell-out, Senior Day crowd of 18,500, the Buckeye men's team, led by seniors Terence Dials and Je'kel Foster, pulled away from the Boilermakers in the second half after a close first 20 minutes.
The Lady Buckeyes are currently participating in the season-ending Big Ten conference championships in Indianapolis, where they have already bested Penn State and, on Sunday, Michigan State. Those victories earned the team a date in the conference tournament finals tonight against Purdue.
Both teams are expected to draw high seeds in the upcoming NCAA tournaments.
Hearty congratulations from the entire Ohio State community to coaches Thad Matta and Jim Foster, all the players and team support staffs on a record-setting year, and best of luck during the upcoming tournaments—Go Bucks!
