Professor Linda Weavers: Girls don’t want to be seen as being nerdy or geeks. They want to be the--everybody wants to be the cool kid. And it’s just often in media and perceptions that engineering and science is not a cool subject. So we’ve got to change that.

(Hovercraft)

Weavers: So this week you saw the hovercraft activity, where we made hovercrafts. We, uh, went to Nestle yesterday and we learned about chocolate and did a taste test there. We learned about water treatment and how diseases spread. We learned about robots and kind of how--we didn’t actually design a robot, but what people that design robots think about when they design robots.

Camper Lena Beckwith: I liked going to Scott’s. I thought I was really cool. We got to, like, pot a plant and, um, interview some of the workers. That was really cool.

University Provost Barbara Snyder: You were selected from among a large group of applicants, and you are a very special group of people, and we are so glad that you could spend this week with us on our campus.

U.S. Senator George Voinovich: Now we’re importing about $6 million. A whole shift is going on just because the natural gas costs are going up so high.

Weavers: It’s really great that we can do something like this at Ohio State where we have faculty in all sorts of diff disciplilnes of not just engineering but also some of the sciences, and the girls can get an experience that’s very, very broad rather than just one particular area of engineering or science.
