The Rock
Ohio State ceremony honors veterans
![]() |
In 1919, students, faculty, and staff gathered each week as Taps was played to honor students who'd been killed in the war.
The tradition has evolved into the annual Rock Ceremony.
At 10:30 a.m. on November 9, cadets from the three Ohio State ROTC units (Army, Navy, and Air Force) will conduct the 20-minute ceremony outside Bricker Hall. President Karen A. Holbrook will place a wreath at the rock dedicated to Ohio State's World War I veterans, Taps will be played, and a 21-gun salute will be fired.
Ohio State has strong military roots. When the university opened in 1870, it was called the Ohio Agricultural, Military, and Mechanical College. (In 1878, it was renamed The Ohio State University.) Classes in tactics and drill were mandatory.
