Gaming 101

As a grad student at Ohio State's Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design, Peter Gerstmann always wished there was a class on how to make video games.

After all, video games are big business these days; the multi-billion-dollar industry has attracted major media companies such as Viacom and Time Warner.

So when Gerstmann came back to Ohio State as a lecturer, he built a video game console and created the class himself.

"The class is team based, each team consisting of specialists in art, sound, and code," Gerstmann said. He teaches students "the many practical considerations of forming a concept, planning its development, and realizing it as a complete working game on a dedicated system."

"With only 10 weeks, elaborate multi-world environments are pretty much out of the question," he said. "The focus is on innovative gameplay and game concept, less Halo and more Parappa."
