WOSU@COSI: Digital Media Center opens

As parents smiled on, toddlers high-fived Clifford the Big Red Dog and danced with Curious George in front of a new TV exhibit.
In a nearby studio, teenagers from a high school media class listened to WOSU staffers talk about the radio business.
No matter what your age, the recent opening of WOSU's Digital Media Center at COSI, the downtown Center of Science and Industry, was fun.
"It’s a unique possibility for us here," says Tom Rieland, general manager of WOSU. “Something Karen Holbrook has always talked about is the outreach and engagement part of the university, and how that is important for Columbus.”
“It’s going to be a wonderful asset for us to be here and be kind of in front of people’s faces about what WOSU is about in the community in the future."
WOSU@COSI is something of an unofficial pilot project for public broadcast stations across the country; the center marks the first time a public station and science museum have paired up. Rieland already has taken a group from Milwaukee on a tour of the facility and fielded phone calls from others.
The main attraction at WOSU@COSI is the filming: From the public exhibit area, visitors can watch radio and TV shows being broadcast.
The center will also host workshops, forums, and documentary premieres. And it's home to two permanent exhibits:
* U-TV, where visitors can watch themselves on TV while the foreground and background changes, putting themselves in the middle of "thousands of combinations" of television scenes. “You can be in the middle of a tornado. You can be playing with Arthur," Rieland says. “We’ll put the marching band in there. We’ll put the football team in there.”
* A media literacy training lab where kids and adults “can learn about podcasting, can learn about webcasting, can learn about how to produce an audio documentary or a video documentary, and can learn how you can manipulate media in a lot of different ways.”
