On February 1, Black Panthers co-founder Bobby Seale kicks off United Black World Month at Ohio State with a lecture on the struggle for civil rights, now and in the past.

Seale speaks at 8 p.m. in the Hitchcock Hall auditorium. The event is free but seating is limited.

Seale has enjoyed a varied career over the past 40 years: In addition to being a civil rights activist, he's also an accomplished barbeque chef with a cooking show (Barbeque with Bobby Seale) and a cookbook (Barbeque'n with Bobby Seale).

The 2007 United Black World Month celebration--"From Slavery to Freedom: Africans in the Americas"--marks the 37th at Ohio State.

February 2 and 16: Soul Food Luncheons. Call 292-0074 for reservations. 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Hale Center.

February 2: Brown Bag Lunch. Professor Daniel Tokaji, an expert on election laws and civil rights, will discuss the role of African Americans in various upcoming elections. Noon, Moritz College of Law.

February 8: Discussion: “Voter Disenfranchisement and the Prospects for Democracy.” Led by Yale political science professor Khaliah Dean Brown. 6:30 p.m., Hale Center.

February 10: Freedom Ball. Students will gather to celebrate the day of Africa's liberation from colonization. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Haimerl Center, 1421 Morse Road.

February 15: Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre, to showcase the contributions that African Americans and other diverse communities have made to the art form of dance. 8 p.m., Mershon Auditorium. Call 688-8449 for tickets.

February 20: African American Quiz Bowl. The annual jeopardy style quiz bowl is open to all student organizations on campus. The questions relate to African and African American culture, pop culture, noted scientists, and engineers. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Hale Center.

February 22: Theatre: Black Boy: The One Man Play. An original play based on autobiographical information on Richard Wright and themes from the book "Black Boy." 8 to 10:30 p.m., Hale Center.

February 28: Gospel and Spiritual Ensemble, Program will feature Ohio State's gospel and spiritual ensemble under the direction of Raymond Wise. Tickets are required and will be sold at the door. 8 p.m. Weigel Hall
