Ohio State commemorates 9/11
The anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 give a moment
for the entire Ohio State community to remember and reflect upon how
our lives have changed in the past year. The following campus events
are scheduled:
Flag Ceremony
At 8:40 a.m on the 11th, Ohio State's ROTC units will begin a flag
ceremony at the rock on the Oval side of Bricker Hall by playing
the National Anthem as the flag is raised. At 8:46 a.m., the moment
that the first plane hit the first World Trade Center, a moment of silence
will be observed. Then, a color guard will lower the flag to half-staff,
wreaths will be placed near the rock, "Taps" will be played,
and service members will give a 21-gun salute. Faculty, staff, and students
who have been called to serve their country during the past year will
be acknowledged in programs provided at the ceremony. For those unable
to attend the flag ceremony, a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. will be
observed across the campus.

Later that day, a university-wide remembrance will take place at 1 p.m.
at Browning Amphitheater. The event the theme of which is "What
have we learned and how do we live together in the world"
will feature a keynote address by Nancy Rogers, Dean of the Moritz College
of Law, poetry by English Professor David Citino, music, and readings
from the scriptures of various religions. Commemorative wreaths will
be laid on the water at Mirror Lake, and attendees will also be able
to participate in planting flower bulbs around the lake. The remembrance
will be concluded with Carmen Ohio. Immediately following the
remembrance, a discussion focusing on "Grief, Loss, and Sadness,"
will occur at a listening-post tent erected at Browning Amphitheater.
Other university events marking Sept. 11th include:
- A panel of law professors will offer a Sept.
11th retrospective, Law Policy in the Wake of September 11th, at
noon in the auditorium of the Moritz
College of Law, 55 W. 12th Avenue. This discussion will be webcast
simultaneously at http://moritzlaw.osu.edu.
- In remembrance of the events of September 11, the
WOSU Stations are partnering with The Ohio State University's
Center for Survey Research
and The Columbus Dispatch
to create an unprecedented variety of interactive content for television,
radio and the Stations' Web site. On September 11, WOSU will present
One Year Later, a compilation of locally and nationally produced television
and radio programs and an interactive Web site (www.wosu.org)
that will feature a variety of content, including a live chat, Columbus
Dispatch articles, an attitudes and lifestyles survey, firsthand accounts
of the tragedy, and radio news stories.
One Year Later includes -
- Primetime television programs beginning at 8 p.m. that include a one-hour
WOSU.TV special, airing at 10 p.m., featuring five Columbus area residents
who experienced firsthand the tragedy at Ground Zero;
- A live chat with the TV34 program participants, beginning at 11 p.m.;
- A message board where viewers can react to the television discussion;
- Published Columbus Dispatch articles pertinent to 9/11;
- A survey conducted by the Center for Survey Research at The Ohio State
University that reveals the influence of the events of 9/11 on the attitudes
and lifestyles of central Ohio residents;
- Firsthand accounts from eyewitnesses, various professionals who participated
in the rescue and recovery operations, and those who were affected in
some way by the tragedy, including Larry Magliocca, associate professor
of special education in Ohio State's College of Education; OSU retiree
Shirley Brooks-Jones; and University Relations staff member Joshua Alexander.
Web visitors will be invited to add their own stories;
- WOSU Radio news stories, available in both audio stream and text formats;
- Special day-long WOSU Radio programming from 5 a.m. -10 p.m. that
includes live coverage, news magazines, WOSU's Open Line, and participation
in the international Rolling Requiem project, featuring a live broadcast
from Columbus' Broad Street Presbyterian Church supported by Ohio State's
School of Music.
- A Multicultural Center
discussion of how homeland and security matters are interpreted from
the vantage points of various cultures and communities at 3 p.m. Sept.
11 in 436 Ohio Union.
- Reflection and meditation at the Chadwick
Arboretum's meditative garden and Chartres-style labyrinth.
Candles will be available for visitors all day Sept. 11 at the arboretum.
- A commemorative screening of "Underground Zero: Independent Filmmakers
Respond to 9-11," a moving collection of short films, at 7 p.m.
Sept. 13 at the Wexner Center.
- The St. Thomas
Moore Newman Center (64 W. Lane Ave., 291-4674) will be open
from 7:30 AM to 9:30 PM on Wednesday, September 11th for prayer and
reflection. There will be a prayer service at Noon time, Mass at 5:30
PM and another prayer service at 7:30 PM. We invite everyone to come
to prayer at anytime during the day.
- Staff members working at The
OSU Alumni Association, The
Fawcett Center, University
Development, the WOSU Stations,
Woody Hayes Athletics
Center and the Schottenstein
Center are invited to attend a brief remembrance ceremony on
the morning of Wednesday, September 11th. Gather around the flagpole
in front of The Fawcett Center at 8:30 a.m. Around 8:45, a few words
of welcome will be extended and a wreath placed by the flagpole. At
8:46 a.m., when the first World Trade tower was struck, the flag will
be lowered to half-mast and a few moments of silence will be observed.
This will be followed by singing "God Bless America."
