Avant Garde Second Wave 2002 Exhibit and Symposium at University Libraries

The Ohio State University Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, the Friends of the Library, and the Aldus Society will present "An Avant Garde Symposium" in conjunction with "An American Avant Garde: Second Wave Exhibition" in the Main Library at Ohio State, July 26-27. The keynote address will be given by Marvin Sackner, named by Art and Antiques magazine as one of the nation's 100 top collectors. Sackner will speak on "The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry" on July 26 in the OSU Faculty Club.

Avant readings, multi-media presentations, papers and a roundtable discussion will be conducted during both days. Presenters will include Ivan Argelles, John M. Bennett, Robert Jackson, Richard Kostelanetz, Jim Leftwich, Sheila E. Murphy, Marvin Sackner, Thomas L. Taylor, and others, all of whom are represented by extensive archival collections at Ohio State and whose publications, manuscripts, correspondence, and artwork are featured in the exhibition in the Philip Sills Gallery of the Main Library through August, 2002.

The OSU Libraries have become a major research source for American avant-garde literatures. The Avant Writing Collection has grown exponentially since its inception in 1998 and focuses on avant-garde poets and writers born in the late 1930's through the 1970's. One of the most important of these resources is the collection of William S. Burroughs materials, the largest such archive in the world, brought to the Libraries through the efforts of Geoffrey D. Smith, Head of the Rare Books and Manucripts Library. The collection includes manuscripts, correspondence and works by and about Burroughs, with vast amounts of similar materials from avant-garde writers around the world. During Summer 2001, the Libraries held a major and much heralded exhibit of these materials, An American Avant Garde: First Wave. John M. Bennett, curator, Avant Writing Collection, Rare Books and Manuscript Library, and Special Collections cataloger at the OSU Libraries curated both the 2001 and 2002 Avant exhibitions.
