The College of Optometry

The Ohio State University College of Optometry is a leader in optometric education among the 21 established schools and colleges of optometry in the United States. We strive to provide the best education for our students who will use that knowledge to practice, teach and conduct research to advance the profession.

The faculty and students are moving vision science forward into new realms of understanding and have long been collaborators and leaders in research and teaching. Ohio State encompasses seven health sciences disciplines, enabling us to work with colleagues across campus toward solving our world’s most pressing optometric health issues.

To retain our position as a leader in the discipline and to further advance our program, we must keep pace with the speed of technology and the progress of vision science. National trends in the optometric scope of practice provide opportunities for growth, redevelopment and expansion of the professional curriculum. Your support will enable The Ohio State University College of Optometry to make great strides in the future of the profession of optometry.

Ohio State and the College of Optometry

The Ohio State University College of Optometry was the first optometry program offered by a public institution, the first to offer a master of science, the first to offer a PhD and among the first to offer a doctor of optometry degree.

The college creates a pipeline of professionals who preserve vision and improve lives. Since its founding in 1914, it has produced many leaders, including deans and presidents, researchers, executives and professional association presidents. Our students and faculty are an important healthcare resource for the state of Ohio, as more than half of the state’s practicing optometrists are Ohio State graduates. Even before graduating, our students work alongside our top-notch faculty to serve the community’s optometric needs. In central Ohio alone, they serve approximately 22,000 patients per year through our on-campus clinic, and through our community outreach partnerships with Faith Mission and Lower Lights Christian Health Center.

With the College of Optometry’s tradition of excellence comes the urgent need for ongoing investment to enhance our program and ensure it is equipped to address contemporary issues in vision.

Your support is essential to realizing the full potential of the college’s future, helping us compete for top students and faculty, transforming our facilities to suit the modern demands of the profession, and increasing the amount of funding for cutting-edge research.
