Temporary
Tuition Cap Exemption Essential
Among the most important actions to fund this Academic Plan is
a temporary Ohio State exemption from the state tuition cap. If
such a temporary exemption is granted, we propose to increase
undergraduate tuition beyond the current ceiling by $150 to $180
per year per student for each of the next five to six years. We
have requested such a move with the full support and cooperation
of all the state's four-year institutions and the endorsement
of the Ohio Board of Regents.
It's important to note that financial aid would also be supplemented
so that no student who qualifies for admission and financial aid
would be denied the opportunity to attend Ohio State. Further,
all additional funds would go to improving the quality of our
undergraduate academic experiencemore classroom technology,
smaller class sizes, better course availability and improved academic
advising.
Tuition at our Columbus campus now ranks eighth among Ohio's state
institutions, providing great value for the money. Should our
proposal be accepted and should other universities increase their
tuition as expected, our tuition after five or six years would
still be only third or fourth from the top. Because of the improvements
we will be able to make, however, the value of the education received
would be even greater than before.
If Ohio State is successful, the temporary exemption will appear
in the 2001-02 executive budget adopted by the Governor and General
Assembly.
