Ohio
State Launches Academic
Plan
The Goal: Preparing Students for Jobs While Building Ohios
Knowledge Economy
(continued)
Competitiveness
This plan will also bring more world-class faculty to Ohio State,
thus attracting federal and private dollars and building cutting-edge
research initiatives in a
variety of areas. This is important because Ohio is losing the
competitive position that it held in the old economy. We rank
32nd nationally in the creation of high-tech
jobs, 29th in the number of high-growth companies, 29th in venture
capital investment, and 40th in workforce education level. As
a result, Ohios personal income ranking has declined from
sixth in 1960 to 22nd today.
Other States Have Benefitted
States such as California, Texas, Massachusetts, Georgia, and
North Carolina have leaped to the forefront by making substantial
investments in research and education. Areas like Silicon Valley;
Austin, Texas; Route 128 near Boston; Atlanta; and the Raleigh-Durham
Research Triangle have created large numbers of high-paying new
jobs and growing economic prosperity for their regions. Many other
states seek to emulate their success.
In analyzing such success stories, The New York Times wrote:
If there is one never-absent factor at work, it is the proximity
of a research university shifting from ivory tower to revving
economic engine.
The 17 public institutions included in the U.S. News &
World Reports 50 top universities represent ten states.
According to the American Electronics Association, those stateson
averagesignificantly exceed Ohio in high-tech employment,
high-employment growth, wages paid to high-tech workers, high-tech
businesses created, and Research & Development expenditures.
In addition, Ohio scores 44.77 on the Progressive Policy Institutes
New Economy Index. The average score of the ten states referenced
above is 53.09.
Ohio State Can Lead
We can be Ohios revving economic engine. Our
research can translate discoveries into useful knowledge and technology
that in turn can lead to high-growth products and businesses.
This process can bolster the economy, grow the tax base, and address
societal needs for improved health care, better public schools,
less crime, and a higher quality of life. Ohios young men
and women can be prepared for the challenges of this new century
as our state builds a competitive workforce for the knowledge
economy. But to do so requires a bold, breakthrough strategy,
not small increments of change.
Founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution, Ohio State continues
to reinforce Ohios fast-changing agricultural, manufacturing,
and service sectors. It is committed to doing the same for the
economy of the 21st century.
