Six Strategies for Academic Excellence

1. Help Build Ohio’s Future

Our proactive outreach and engagement activities have long benefited Ohio, connecting our research results to the community and the world. We will update our land-grant mission to meet such 21st century needs as assisting Ohio’s pre-school through 12th-grade (P-12) system and helping build Ohio’s technology-based, knowledge economy, while continuing our commitment to agriculture, health care, neighborhood revitalization, and other key needs.

2. Build a World-Class Faculty
Academic excellence begins with high-quality faculty, who not only enhance the university’s teaching and programmatic reputation but also attract the highest quality students. We will recruit faculty who have attained, or have the potential to attain, the highest honors in their disciplines while also implementing a broad faculty recruitment, retention, and development plan.

3. Develop Academic Programs that Define Ohio State as the Nation’s Leading Public Land-Grant University
Today, we lag our benchmark institutions in the number of programs that are highly-ranked by the National Resource Council, U.S. News & World Report and other rating bodies. We will continue our focus on strategic investment, while increasing our emphasis on multidisciplinary initiatives and creating multidisciplinary centers, and we will increase space dedicated to funded research.

4. Enhance the Quality of the Teaching and Learning Environment
Up-to-date infrastructure and learning tools are essential for a university seeking academic excellence. We will transform the library into a 21st century information-age center; upgrade the quality of our classroom pool space; enhance the appearance of campus facilities and grounds; and provide faculty, staff, and students with the latest technology tools for leadership in teaching, learning, research, and career development.

5. Enhance and Better Serve the Student Body
We must recruit and retain to graduation an excellent and diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional student body. We will make admissions selective throughout the year for new freshmen and all transfer students; increase course accessibility, reduce class sizes, and establish additional Scholars programs; and provide ample need-based and merit-based aid for undergraduates and a competitive financial aid and fellowship support package for graduate and professional students.

6. Create a Diverse University Community

A growing body of research links diversity and academic excellence. To create a rich learning environment, we will recruit and retain greater numbers of women and minorities into faculty, staff, and administrative positions—especially senior positions. We will also recruit and retain to graduation greater numbers of ethnic minority students and create a culture of inclusiveness that respects and values differences.
