Barbara L. Andersen, Ph. D.
Barbara L. Andersen is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University. She has authored three books and more than 150 research articles on behavioral medicine topics.
Her research has been continuously funded since 1985, and the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, the American Cancer Society, and the Department of the Army have supported her current research on biobehavioral aspects of cancer. In 1995 she was one of 50 women scientists invited to the White House to attend a briefing on the Clinton Administration's initiatives in science and technology. In 2000 she received The Ohio State University's Distinguished Scholar Award and, in 2003, the Outstanding Contributions in Health Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association.
Professor Andersen completed her graduate studies at the University of Illinois, receiving the Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1980. During a postdoctoral year at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA, she began her research in cancer and later joined the faculty in the Department of Psychology at the University of Iowa. There she received the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award in Teaching (1985) and the Faculty Scholar Award (1988). She remained there until 1989 when she joined the faculty at Ohio State.
