Arthur J. Epstein, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry, is also the Director of the Center for Materials Research at The Ohio State University. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award of The Ohio State University. He is an author of over 600 publications, has been granted more than 25 patents, and has given numerous plenary and invited talks at international conferences. In 2000 Professor Epstein assumed the post of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Synthetic Metals.
Born in 1945, Professor Epstein grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He received his Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971, following a B.S. degree in physics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1966. He was a principal scientist at Xerox Corporationšs Webster Research Center prior to joining The Ohio State University in 1985.
Professor Epstein has been a visiting professor at universities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His interests include experimental and theoretical study of magnetic and electronic polymers. Professor Epstein is recognized as the world's leading expert in how polymers conduct electricity. In 1985 he co- discovered the first magnet based on organic materials. In addition to teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, since arriving at Ohio State Professor Epstein has mentored more than 30 students to completion of their Ph.D. degrees.
