Coca-Cola and The Women's Place Celebrate Industrious Women on Campus
 |
The Coca-Cola Foundation has been a long-standing supporter of The Women's Place on campus. On Thursday, March 27, the two groups celebrated the hard-working women who have been awarded the Coca-Cola Critical Difference for Women (CDW) Scholarship at their annual luncheon.
In the past 20 years, The Coca-Cola Foundation has exceeded $3 million dollars to support female students with financial need. Most are nontraditional students, who have had their education interrupted. Many go home to families along with their homework. Coca-Cola gives these women a leg up through The Women's Place.
Hazel Morrow-Jones, the head of TWP, spoke at the luncheon and expressed her pride in the women and what they are achieving, and her gratitude to The Coca-Cola Foundation for their continued partnership.
Grace Akua Oforiwa Amponsah was the student speaker for this years luncheon. Having only moved to the United States four years ago from Ghana, Grace shared with her goal of becoming a surgeon. The Coca-Cola CDW Scholarship has enabled Grace to forgo full-time employment in favor of volunteering for Grant Medical Center and also working part-time on campus, the earnings of which she is able to contribute toward her family's bills. She is double majoring in psychology and nutrition, and though it is challenging, "I keep pressing on toward my ultimate goal of becoming a surgeon, because nothing but myself can stop me from reaching it."
This year's luncheon is over, but the impact TWP and The Coca-Cola Foundation make on society through one drivne young woman at a time will be felt for many generations to come.
