Flying Skye high in the Air Force ROTC

Mr. and Mrs. Simonetti at the 2014 Scholarship Reception

Ohio State is proud to boast over 400 participants in its Tri-service Air Force, Army, and Naval ROTC program. These members, though, are not just learning to serve our country: they are also attending class, doing homework, studying for exams and working part-time or full-time jobs. Scholarships like the Allison Thigpen and Michael Carrell Women’s Leadership Scholarship help cadets like Skye Robinson manage the load.

"My time at The Ohio State University has been unforgettable. I have made lifetime friends, learned a lot about myself and discovered so many new opportunities. I can honestly say that I am so glad that I didn't decide to go anywhere else. I am a Buckeye for life.

I am currently enrolled in Air Force ROTC, I work two part time jobs and I play on multiple soccer teams at Soccer First in Dublin. In the future, I hope to graduate and commission as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force. I plan to make a career out of the Air Force, so I won't retire until the Air Force tells me to do so.

The scholarship impacted me in so many positive ways. It took away some of the stress for the finances that I owed. It helped relieve my work schedule so I could focus more on school and ROTC. Additionally, it helped distinguish myself as a role model to the younger cadets within the ROTC program.

Making college affordable is very near and dear to my heart. Not being able to afford it was one of the reasons why I didn't think I was going to be able to attend college. However, without a college degree, I could not commission as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force. Therefore, scholarships, like this one, give hope to those who think they cannot afford it. I aspire to one day be able to give back and make college affordable for others. A college education is so important these days that making it a possibility should always be a goal."
