Ohio State hosts "CCS Baseball Day" on Tuesday
Columbus 6th graders will see baseball game while learning
The Ohio State University is joining with Columbus City Schools (CCS) for "CCS Baseball Day" on Tuesday (5/13). The day includes approximately 2,600 sixth-grade students and staff from nearly 30 Columbus City Schools coming to campus for an educational pep rally at 10 a.m. in the Jerome Schottenstein Center followed by a Buckeye baseball game vs. Buffalo at 12:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.
Now in it's fourth year, CCS Day is designed to show young students the opportunities for and advantages of higher education and the importance of staying in school. The program is one of many partnerships between Ohio State and Columbus City Schools.
The sixth-graders, who met attendance criteria set by their schools, will be welcomed to campus by the Ohio State cheerleaders, mascot Brutus Buckeye and members of the Ohio State band. Archie Griffin, President and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, student-athletes and other guest speakers will participate in the pep rally, intended to get 6th graders excited about college at an early age. Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene Harris will also introduce the district's newest inductees into Ohio State's Young Scholars Program, a statewide inititiative to prepare students from underserved urban school districts for college.
Before the game, students will enjoy lunch at Bill Davis Stadium. Students will throw out the first pitch, perform the national anthem, act as public address announcers, and meet members of the media in the press box.
The event is being coordinated by Ohio State's Department of Athletics, the university's P-12 Project, and the Office of Student Affairs, as well as CCS and the Children's Hunger Alliance.
Media interested in covering the baseball game should contact Jerry Emig of Ohio State Athletics Communications at (614) 688-0343.
