Ohio State hosts "Baseball Day" on Tuesday

Columbus City Schools 6th graders will attend "academic pep rally" and see baseball game

More than 3,000 sixth-grade students from nearly 30 Columbus City Schools will visit Ohio State on Tuesday (5/12) for "Baseball Day." Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College are joining with the school district for the event, which begins with a high-energy program at 10 a.m. in the Jerome Schottenstein Center followed by a Buckeye baseball game vs. Eastern Michigan at 12:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.

Now in it's fifth year, Baseball Day is designed to show young students the opportunities for and advantages of higher education and the importance of staying in school. The program is one of many collaborations between Ohio State and Columbus City Schools.

The sixth-graders will be welcomed to campus by the Ohio State cheerleaders, pep band, and the Clawdette, Columbus State's Cougar mascot. The pep rally opens with members of the ROTC rappelling from the ceiling to the floor of the Schottenstein. Staff from COSI, Columbus State's mathematics chairperson, student-athletes and other guest speakers will participate in the event, which is intended to get 6th graders excited about college at an early age.

Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene Harris will also introduce the district's newest inductees into Ohio State's Young Scholars Program, a statewide initiative to prepare students from underserved urban school districts for college.

Before the game, students will enjoy lunch at Bill Davis Stadium, courtesy of Children's Hunger Alliance. Students will throw out the first pitch, and perform the national anthem.
