Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a “day on, not a day off” – Jan. 21. Ohio State students are participating in two events for the King holiday.
*Annual Day of Service, 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. More thank 800 students are expected to participate in the event. Students gather at the Ohio Union for a brief program before going throughout the city of Columbus volunteering. The students volunteer at various places that need assistance, such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Complex, food pantries, shelters, etc., and volunteer their services. They conclude at the Hale Center for reflection.
*Annual MLK March for Freedom, 2:45 p.m. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity sponsors an Annual MLK March for Freedom downtown. Students convene at the Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center and march to City Hall to join the City of Columbus’ Annual MLK March/Program. CONTACT: Larry Williamson.
Former U.S. Surgeon General to lecture, and will be available to media – Jan. 23. Richard Carmona, 17th U.S. Surgeon General and The Ohio State University College of Nursing Dean’s Distinguished Professor of Health Promotion and Entrepreneurship, will deliver a lecture and panel discussion on "Interprofessional Collaboration and Public Health Innovation to Transform Health and Health Care Systems" at 11 a.m. on Wednsday, Jan. 23 at the Ohio Union Performance Hall, 1739 N. High St.
He will be available to speak with reporters at 2 p.m. at the Ohio Union Sphinx Conference Room. As Surgeon General, he issued many landmark communications including the definitive Surgeon General's Report about the dangers of second-hand smoke.
The College of Nursing has engaged Dr. Carmona and the Canyon Ranch Institute, where he serves as president, to help with health literacy and life enhancement in central Ohio. Exhibit marks 100th anniversary of Jesse Owens’ birth – through May 5. The Ohio State University Archives is honoring Jesse Owens with an exhibition titled “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Jesse Owens: 100 Years of Life and Legacy” through May 5 in the William Oxley Thompson Library Gallery.
Owens made history at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by winning four gold medals in track and field. He spent much of his later life working with young people and serving as a goodwill ambassador for the Olympic movement and the United States.
The exhibit explores Owens’ legacy after his death in 1980 and his connection to today’s Olympic athletes. Highlights include Owens’ Olympic gold medals and diary, an Olympic torch from the 1936 Berlin Games, and Owens’ Presidential Medal of Freedom. Material from the 2012 London Olympics worn by an Ohio State University student-athlete are also included. CONTACT: Tamar Chute.
