BuckeyeThon dance marathon bigger than ever – Feb. 8-9. Ohio State’s BuckeyeThon, which raises money for Nationwide Children’s Hospital, has grown so large that it will take place in two shifts. Since 2001, students have raised over $1 million. Last year, 1,800 students participated and helped raise $450,000. This year, 3,500 students have registered for the dance marathon, making it the largest dancer registration number in the history of Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathons. Approimately 1,400-1,600 dancers will dance each shift.
The BuckeyeThon 2013 Dance Marathon takes place in two 12-hour shift dance marathons in the Archie Griffin Ballroom at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. The first shift begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 and ends at 8 a.m. on Feb. 9. The second shift begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 and ends at 11 p.m. The “big reveal,” where the fundraising total is announced, takes place at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. Ohio State celebrates Anne and Woody Hayes – Feb. 10-15. The Ohio State University will lead the celebration of legendary football coach Woody Hayes on February 15, 2013, marking 100 years since his February 14, 1913, birth. The event will highlight Hayes coaching career, as well as both Anne and Woody Hayes’ impact on the university.
The main university event, the Woody and Anne Hayes Tribute Event, will be a celebration dinner at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15, at the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility; 535 Irving Schottenstein Dr. Prior to the event, former football players who were coached by Hayes, including Greg Lashutka and Paul Warfield, will be available for media interviews at 5 p.m.

Throughout the week, student events across campus commemorate Woody and Anne Hayes. Interesting media opportunities include:
* A Legends of Woody Hayes tour of campus
* Opportunities to “Push Woody’s Car over the Border,” commemorating the story that Woody once ran out of gas in Michigan, but rather than fill his tank there, he pushed it across the border and into Ohio.
Other events include:
* Flag football tournament in the “shadow of Ohio Stadium”
* Chocolate roses for sale, honoring Woody’s love for the Rose Bowl
* Classes on how to speak and cook like Anne Hayes
* Fitness drills to test whether a student is as fit as an elite athlete
* A lecture, “Woody Hayes - The Most Selfless Man I’ve Ever Met: An Evening with Jack Park hosted by Joe Blundo”
* Rose Bowl cupcakes and Rose Bowl cake decorating

New e-learning tool for Ohio teachers unveiled at learning technology conference – Feb. 11. The Ohio Board of Regents will preview the ilearnOhio portal (www.ilearnohio.org) for educators and technology experts in Columbus attending the eTech Ohio Commission’s Educational Technology Conference at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in the eTech Pavillion. The ilearnOhio portal was developed following legislation that called for the establishment of the clearinghouse and awarded the task in 2011 to the Ohio Resource Center in The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology.

Media are invited to cover the introduction of this new learning tool, which takes place throughout the conference (Feb. 11-13), including the announcement of it 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11.

Victoria’s Secret fashion show founder Ed Razek to share career advice – Feb. 13. The man behind the hugely popular Victoria’s Secret fashion show, Ed Razek, will speak to Ohio State University Fashion and Retail Studies students from 9:10-10:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater, 1871 N. High St. Razek, president of Limited Brand and Creative Services, and chief marketing officer for Limited Brands, significantly contributed to Victoria’s Secret becoming one of the most powerful brands in the world. Society of Composers National Conference at Ohio State – Feb. 13-16. The Society of Composers (SCI) National Conference will be held at Ohio State February 13-16, under the auspices of the School of Music’s Contemporary Music Festival. The festival will feature 100 new works of music in 12 concerts over the three and a half days, many of which are world premieres. The festival also will welcome guest composers, performers, and scholars from all over the United States, panel sessions on new music, and performances by Ohio State faculty and students.

The keynote speaker is Joshua Fineberg, a noted composer and author. Other highlights include noted violinist and Ohio State Professor Kia-Hui Tan, guest artists pianist Fali Pavri of the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow, renowned Anubis Saxophone Quartet, and appearances by School of Music ensembles. Far from a staid, academic event, the conference will celebrate music from the (late) Frank Zappa and Michael Daugherty, as well as music ranging from choral, symphonic, and electroacoustic to chamber and multi-media performances.

Million Hearts screenings to prevent heart attacks and strokes on Valentine's Day – Feb. 14. The Million Hearts Campaign is a national initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Ohio State is supporting this effort by offering free biometric health screenings and education to all faculty, staff, and students on Valentine's Day. Our tag line is "if you give your heart to another…make sure it’s healthy!" Your Plan for Health, the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Ohio Health Plan, Office of Human Resources, and College of Nursing are partnering on this effort. Biometrics screenings, including a station at Newton Hall staffed by nursing students, as well as education stations covering the ABCs of cardiovascular disease prevention, will take place on Feb. 14. Lecture on Racism and Health features Harvard Professor David Williams – Feb. 15. Ohio State’s Institute for Population Research presents David Williams for a lecture on Racism and Health: Findings and Questions and Directions, at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 on the 11th floor of Thompson Library. Williams is the Florence and Laura Norman Professor of Public Health, and professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Hip hop’s YoYo is guest at the Hip Hop Literacies Conference - Feb. 15 and 16. YoYo, a hip hop MC and advocate for young women, will be featured during the Third Annual Hip Hop Literacies Conference Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 16, in Columbus. “Pedagogies for Social Change” explores issues that affect youth: education, racism, social identity, impoverishment, and social inequality in local and international communities.
