Spring has Sprung--Ohio State students have wrapped up winter quarter and are enjoying spring break this week. Classes for the 10-week spring quarter begin March 27. Spring Commencement, on the Oval, is June 9.

Kellogg Commission Issues Final Report--March 21. Ohio State University President William Kirwan will be in Washington D.C. on Tuesday (3/21) to play a leading role in a 1 p.m. news conference sponsored by the Kellogg Commission on the Future of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. Commission members will present their sixth and final publication, Renewing the Covenant: Learning, Discovery, and Engagement in a New Age and Different World. Kirwan chaired the committee producing the report, which urges passage of legislation to help universities acquire the technological infrastructure they need to meet their broad responsibilities, as well as changes in the tax code to encourage more university-private sector research partnerships. Hola! Circleville--A pilot program to introduce Spanish to elementary students is extending Ohio State's outreach and diversity efforts into rural Pickaway County. Taking Spanish Speaking Countries Into The Country, is funded by a $10,000 OSU CARES grant. At Washington Elementary School near Circleville, students in kindergarten through third grade are learning Spanish as a second language. Educators say learning a second language helps improve overall literacy as well as state proficiency test scores. The project is spearheaded by Debbie Wilburn Robinson, assistant professor of foreign and second language education in the School of Teaching and Learning; as well as others in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and OSU Extension.
