OSU Trustees approve urban education expert as new dean; endowed funds, other personnel changes also OK'd
CINCINNATI - The Ohio State University Board of Trustees meeting Friday (4/7) at the University of Cincinnati approved the appointment of Donna D. Evans of NORFOLK, Va.., as dean and professor of the College of Education and School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, effective July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2005. Currently dean of the Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University in Virginia, Evans earned three degrees from Ohio State: a B.S. in elementary education, a M. A. in counselor education and a Ph.D. in counselor education and educational administration. She did post-graduate work at the University of Rochester and post-doctoral work at the Institute for Reality Therapy and Harvard University.
In other business, biomedical engineering students at Ohio State are the beneficiaries of a new endowed fund in the College of Engineering. The Kettering Biomedical Engineering Scholarship Fund, established with $300,000 in gifts from The Kettering Fund in DAYTON, will be used to fund scholarships for biomedical engineering majors in each of their junior and senior years. Half of the scholarships will be reserved for students native to Ohio.
The Kettering Fund was one of 20 new named endowed funds, totaling nearly $1.27 million, received by The Ohio State University Development Fund and The Ohio State University Development Foundation and accepted by the university's Board of Trustees at its April 7 meeting in Cincinnati. The board also amended two endowed funds, approved several personnel appointments, and granted emeritus status to 10 faculty.
Endowed Funds
· The Chih-Ming and Jane Chen Graduate Fellowship Fund in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, $265,000, established with a gift from the Chens of FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
· The Kathy and Alec Wightman Endowment Fund for Cancer Genetics Research, $115,150, established with a principal gift from alumnus John Deaver Drinko (J.D. '44) of CLEVELAND and additional gifts from the Wightman family in honor of Alec Wightman for his leadership of The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute Foundation
· The Wells Family Athletic Scholarship Fund, $100,000, established with gifts from William D. Wells of WESTERVILLE
· Robert D. Lowrie Innovation Endowment Fund, $69,231, established with gifts from Robert D. Lowrie (B.S. Bus. Adm. '67) of AURORA, Ill. in support of the Fisher College of Business
· The Dr. Boong Youn Cho Endowed Fund in Physics, $40,000, established with gifts from Jungsoon Cho and Helen H. Cho of COLUMBUS, Tony D. Cho of DIAMOND BAR, Calif., and Judy H. Cho of CHICAGO, Ill.
· The Leo Yassenoff Foundation Endowed Research Fund, $40,000, to support Jewish studies
· The Richard Shroyer and Cheryl Evans Leiss Family fund, $37,629, in support of the Stefanie Spielman Breast Cancer Research fund and student support in the Department of Food Science and Technology
· The James M. Barrett Family Endowment Fund, $26,600, established in memory of Barrett (B.S. Animal Sciences '62; M.S. Agricultural Education '94), for student and program support in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
· The Donald T. Witiak Graduate Student Award Fund in Medicinal Chemistry, $25,825, established with gifts from Deanne B. Witiak (B.S.Ed '73; M.A. Education '89) of MT. VERNON and friends and colleagues of the late Professor Witiak.
· The Ruth Kroff Foster Scholarship Fund in Elementary Education, $25,794, established with gifts from Foster (B.S. Ed. '54) and Ralph Vernon Foster (B.S. Pharm. '56)
· The Class of 1974 Scholarship Fund for Student Nurses, $25,654, established with gifts from Jennifer R. Watts (B.S. Nurs. '74) and classmates

Academic Appointments
· Jean M. Hubble of ARLINGTON has been named associate professor (The Clayton C. Wagner Parkinson's Disease Research Professorship) in the Department of Neurology, effective April 1, 2000 through June 30, 2004. Dr. Hubble earned her medical degree at the University of Kansas Medical Center and completed her neurology residency at Ohio State. She served on the faculty of the University of Kansas Department of Neurology and Parkinson's Disease Center before accepting the post of medical director of Ohio State's Parkinson's Disease Center of Excellence and Movement Disorders Clinic in 1995.
· Brad A. Myers of COLUMBUS (43214) has been named university registrar, effective Feb. 1. Myers, who had been serving as acting registrar since July 1998, has been associated with the Office of the University Registrar for 10 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in counseling psychology and a law degree from Ohio State and has completed doctoral work in higher education administration.
· William T. McDaniel of COLUMBUS (43209) has been named acting chair of the Department of African-American and African Studies, effective Feb.21, 2000 through Sept. 30, 2001

· Approved several amendments to the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of The Ohio State University Hospitals and to the Rules of the University Faculty.
· Accepted a report of the award of contracts and the establishment of contingency funds for three projects:
-- The second phase of the remodeling of Blankenship Hall, 901 Woody Hayes Dr., will create facilities for departments in the Office of Business and Finance, the Office of Commencement and Special Events and general building space. Total project cost is $3.3 million provided by central university funds, and the estimated completion date is June 2000.
-- The remodeling of portions of Caldwell Laboratory, 2024 Neil Ave., will provide general classrooms and space for College of Engineering use. The $1.6 million project will also remodel areas in Bolz Hall for College of Engineering use. Funding is provided by the state, the College of Engineering and the Department of Physical Facilities. Estimated completion date is August 2001.
-- A $1.25 million renovation to Morrill Hall on the Marion campus will provide general classrooms, distance-learning classrooms, an educational media laboratory, and an academic skills laboratory. Funding is provided by the state, Marion Technical College and Marion Regional Campus. Estimated completion date is October 2000.
