Statement Regarding the Death of a Student

   An Ohio State University student, Joseph Evan Upshaw, 22, of Kettering, Ohio, died at 5:57 a.m. today (4/21) at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Cause of death has not been confirmed, pending results of tests by the Franklin County Coroner's Office. Upshaw was brought to the Emergency Department about 5:10 a.m. by Columbus Fire Department medics who responded to a call from the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house, 67 E. 15th Ave.

At this time the incident is under investigation by the Columbus Police Department and the university's Office of Student Affairs.

Upshaw was a fourth-year student majoring in industrial and systems engineering at Ohio State and a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Staff from the university and from the national office of Delta Tau Delta are offering counseling to Upshaw's fraternity brothers and classmates.

The university extends its sympathy to Joseph Upshaw's family and friends. "This is a tragedy," said President William E. Kirwan. "When a student dies, it is a loss for all of us. Our hearts go out to the Upshaw family."
