Trustees accept endowed funds, approve personnel changes
COLUMBUS - A new endowed chair, established Friday (5/5) by the The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, will advance the study of lung cancer at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The Barbara J. Bonner Chair in Lung Cancer Research, funded with $1.5 million in gifts from C. William Bonner of POWELL, highlighted the report by Vice President for Development Jerry May to the trustees.
Along with the Bonner Chair, the trustees established eight other new named endowed funds for a total of $2,199,775 in gifts to the university. They also heard a report on the university's endowment, approved several personnel appointments, and approved the naming of several university facilities, among other business.
Endowed Funds
· The HER Realtors Fund in Real Estate, $400,000, established with gifts from Harley E. Rouda (B.S. Bus. Adm. 1953) and Marlese Neher Rouda (B.S. Bus. Adm. 1952) to support the HER Realty Symposium and/or in support of the Fisher College of Business Center for Real Estate
· The Daniel G. and Hildegarde R. Hummel Endowed Scholarship Fund, $127,362, established with a gift from Hildegarde Hummel in memory of her husband, Daniel (B.S. Applied Optics 1928)
· The Janet S. Crist Alumni House Endowment Fund, $49,350, established with gifts from Janet S. Crist (M.A. Music 1947)
· Daniel Westerbeck Teaching Excellence Endowment Fund, $30,000, established with gifts from Westerbeck (B.S. Bus. Adm. 1967) to support teaching in the Fisher College of Business
· The Richard H. and Judith B. Reuning Fund for Service Learning in Pharmacy, $26,475, established with gifts from Dr. and Mrs. Reuning, former graduate advisees of Dr. Reuning, friends and colleagues
· The Marialuisa Ferrari Lectureship for Life Fund, $25,000, established with a gift from Mauro Ferrari to support a lectureship on pain management and palliative medicine at the Comprehensive Cancer Center - The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
· The Hildreth Foundation Athletic Scholarship Fund, $25,000, established with gifts from the Hildreth Foundation and family
· The Josaphat Kubayanda Fund, $16,214, established with gifts from family, friends and colleagues to support the annual Josphat Kubayanda Memorial Lecture in the Center for African Studies and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese
Endowment Report
University Treasurer James L. Nichols updated trustees on the university's endowment, which stands at $1.264 billion as of April 30. He reported that income distributed from the endowment to colleges and departments during the past fiscal year (1998-99) reached an all-time high of $45.5 million. In an annual report on the status of the university's tax exempt bonds, Nichols reported that the university's debt at the end of March stood at $350 million.
The board also approved the appointment and reappointment of external investment managers to assist in the management of the university's endowment fund.
Academic Appointments
· William L. Hayton of COLUMBUS (43214) has been named Charles H. Kimberly Professor in Pharmacy, effective July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2003. Hayton received his B.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of Washington and his doctorate in pharmaceutics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He joined the Ohio State faculty in 1990 as professor and chair of the Division of Pharmaceutics after a 16-year tenure at the Washington State University College of Pharmacy.
· Evelyn B. Freeman of WORTHINGTON has been named director of the College of Education's School of Teaching and Learning, effective April 1, 2000 through June 30, 2004. A professor of teaching and learning, Freeman also serves as associate dean in the college. Her areas of scholarship include the uses and implementation of literature-based curricula, informational children's literature, and kindergarten policies and practices.
· David E. Hahm of DUBLIN has been named chair of the Department of Greek and Latin in the College of Humanities, effective May 1, 2000 through September 30, 2003. A specialist in ancient philosophy and science and Greek literature, Hahm holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and is the author of The Origins of Stoic Cosmology.
· Krishnaswamy Srinivasan of DUBLIN has been named chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, effective July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2004. A professor of dynamic systems, measurements and controls, he holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. His major research interests include modeling and control of dynamic systems in a variety of applications.

The Board approved resolutions in memoriam for the following:
· Albert A. Ferdi, manager emeritus for the Lantern in the School of Journalism and Communication, who died March 15, 2000
· Donald McMillen Hilliker, former member and chair of The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, who died on April 14, 2000
· E. Ivor Jones, professor emeritus in The Ohio State University Extension, who died on March 30, 2000
· Richard Tetley-Kardos, professor emeritus in the School of Music, who died on Dec. 7, 1999
Facilities Named
In other actions, the Board approved the naming of the following facilities:
· The Richard L. Shelly Family Press Box in Ohio Stadium, in recognition of the family's contribution to the funding of Ohio Stadium improvements
· The Huntington Club at Ohio Stadium, in recognition of Huntington National Bank of Columbus' contribution to the funding of Ohio Stadium improvements
· The All-American Buckeye Grove Sponsored by MI Schottenstein Homes Foundation, in recognition of the foundation's contribution enabling improvements to the All-American Buckeye Grove
· The Varsity "O" Football Club Sponsored by MI Schottenstein Homes Foundation - a special hospitality room in Ohio Stadium devoted to members of Varsity "O" - in recognition of the foundation's contribution to the funding of Ohio Stadium improvements
· The John W. Wolfe Cancer Genetics Research Laboratories in Wiseman Hall, 400 West 12th Ave., in recognition of Mr. Wolfe's leadership in establishing the James Cancer Hospital and the Wolfe family's longtime support of Ohio State.

Miscellaneous Actions
The board accepted a gift of 4.9 acres of unimproved land on Dodridge Street, just east of the university's Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, donated by Olentangy Cove Associates, Ltd. The university will receive an endowment of approximately $60,000 from the Ohio Department of Transportation for the School of Natural Resources to maintain the mitigation site and, through the university's Research Foundation, a research contract for approximately $75,000.
The board approved the following changes in reporting lines and name of degree:
· The Comprehensive Cancer Center will change its reporting line from the senior vice president for health sciences to the executive vice president and provost.
· The School of Public Health will change its reporting line from the dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health to the executive vice president and provost.
· The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design degree will now be the Bachelor of Science in Design.
