Two undergraduate students named Barry M. Goldwater Scholars

COLUMBUS -- Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships have been awarded to two Ohio State University undergraduate students. Scholarships were awarded to 309 students from the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,176 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by faculty members from their respective colleges and universities. Of the scholars, 188 are men, 121 are women and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D in their academic discipline.

Recipients, both juniors, are John Antos of MENTOR, and Matt Buoni of COLUMBUS (43227).

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was created in 1986 in honor of the Arizona senator. The scholarship, awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors, aims to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Recipients are selected by an independent review committee appointed by the Foundation. The one- and two-year scholarships cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. All Ohio State recipients will receive a one-year scholarship.

Antos, a chemistry major, has been working on new ways to recreate an anti-tumor agent with Robert Coleman, associate professor of chemistry, since June of 1999. After graduation, he plans to study in the field of organic synthesis. Antos, a 1997 graduate of Mentor High School, is the son of Tim and Barbara Antos, 7942 Stockbridge Road, Mentor.

Buoni, an engineering and physics major, has been working in plasma physics with Professor Vish Subramaniam in mechanical engineering. He plans to attend graduate school where he will study condensed matter theory. Buoni, a 1996 graduate of Liberty Christian Academy in Columbus, is the son of James and LouAnne Buoni, 3156 Scottwood Road, Columbus.
