Ohio State trustees establish $1 million endowed fund, accept other funds, approve academic appointments
COLUMBUS - A $1 million gift from two 1932 graduates of The Ohio State University, Kenneth B. and Ednah Y. Fishpaw of FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., tops the list of named endowed funds accepted Friday (6/2) by Ohio State's Board of Trustees. The gift establishes the Kenneth B. and Ednah Y. Fishpaw Innovation Endowment Fund to be used to advance the activities of the faculty and students in the Max M. Fisher College of Business.
The Fisher College also received another boost in the form of the Fisher Council on Global Trade and Technology Fund, established with a $964,586 gift from Leslie H. Wexner (B.S. Bus. Adm. 1959) in honor of Max M. Fisher (B. S. Bus. Adm. 1930). The annual income shall be used to support global initiatives that focus on international trade/technology issues through multiple forums, including a major annual address by a well-known figure.
In addition to these two gifts, the board accepted 16 other new named endowed funds for a total of $3.7 million in gifts to the university. In other business, the board also approved several academic personnel appointments and approved amendments to the board committee appointments for 2000-2001, the university faculty bylaws and the medical staff bylaws of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
Endowed funds
· The James D. and Sally Mavko Klingbeil Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship Fund, $427,487, established with gifts from James D. (B.S.Bio Sci. 1958) and Sally M. Klingbeil (B.S.Ed. 1958) of SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., to provide undergraduate scholarships to students from Madison High School in Lake County, Oh.
· The John W. Wolfe Human Cancer Genetics Research Endowment Fund, $303,689, established with a gift from The Robert W. Wolfe and Edgar T. Wolfe Foundation to support research by the scientist appointed to The John W. Wolfe Chair in Cancer Research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center -James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
· The Earl W. and Wilma Shane McMunn Scholarship Fund in Agricultural Communications, $186,046, established with gifts from the estate of Earl W. (B.S.Agr 1934) and Wilma Shane McMunn.
· The Earl W. and Wilma Shane McMunn Scholarship Fund in Dairy Science, $186,046.
· The Multiple Sclerosis Research and Education Endowment Fund, $134,803, established with gifts from the estate of A. Robert Kent of COLUMBUS, in his name and that of his wife, the late Mary Jo Kent.
· The Virginia Blackburn DeBarger Scholarship Fund, $121,360, established with gifts from DeBarger, who attended Ohio State from 1927 to 1931.
· The William H. and Dorothea N. Hadler Medical Research Fund, $100,000, established in honor of Dr. Manuel Tzagournis, former vice president for health sciences and dean of the College of Medicine, with gifts from the Hadlers of COLUMBUS.
· Licking County, Ohio Alumni Scholarship Fund, $91,125.
· The Robert J. McCoy Leadership Endowment Fund, $37,092, established with gifts from McCoy (B.S.Animal Sci. 1953; M.S. Agri. Econ. 1957) of CINCINNATI, to support undergraduate students in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
· The Fred Beekman Endowed Fund, $30,300, established with gifts from the Beekman family of COLUMBUS and friends to support annual enhancements to the Fred Beekman Park at Ohio State.
· The Charles F. Sinsabaugh, M.D., Medical Research Fund, $26,602, established in honor of Dr. Manuel Tzagournis, with gifts from Dr. Sinsabaugh (B.A.Bio. Sci. 1947; M.D. 1951) of NEWARK.
· The Jot D. Carpenter Scholarship Fund, $25,055, established with gifts from the Carpenter family, friends, colleagues and students in his memory to support a scholarship in the Knowlton School of Architecture for a landscape architecture student.
· The Allan and Helga Wildman Memorial Fund, $25,032, established with gifts from friends and family of the late Wildman, an Ohio State professor of Russian history, and his wife, to support graduate students in Russian or East European history.
· The Richard Furry Basketball Scholarship Fund, $25,000, established with gifts from Furry of CLEVELAND.
· The Residency in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery Fund, $25,000, established with a gift from Shirley A. Bensinger of DAYTON, in honor of James W. Harrison, D.V.M and special dachshund, Tucker.
· The Mark D. Schwabero Family Endowment Fund, $25,000, established with gifts from Schwabero (B.S.Industrial and Systems Eng. 1975; M.S. Industrial and Systems Eng. 1976) and Charlotte A. Schwabero of NAPERVILLE Ill., to support faculty teaching and research in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
Academic appointments
· Deborah Jones Merritt of UPPER ARLINGTON has been named interim director of The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy, effective July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001. Merrit holds a concurrent appointment as the John Deaver Drinko - Baker & Hostetler Professor of Law. A graduate of Harvard University, she holds a J.D. from Columbia University, where she was managing editor of the Columbia Law Review. Prior to joining Ohio State's College of Law faculty in 1995, she was professor and associate dean at the University of Illinois College of Law.
· Alexander Stephan has been named the Ohio Eminent Scholar in German in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures/ Mershon Center, effective Oct. 1, 2000. Alexander is currently professor of German at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. He received his master's degree in German and American literatures from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in German literature from Princeton. Stephan is the recipient for several National Endowment for the Humanities and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellowships and received a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship in 1989-90.
· Ming You has been named to the Barbara J. Bonner Chair in Lung Cancer Research in the Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics, Division of Human Cancer Genetics in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective May 1, 2000, through June 30, 2004. Prior to joining the Ohio State faculty, You was research director of the Comprehensive Oncology Center at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. He received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Beijing and a Ph.D. in pathology from the Medical College of Ohio.
· Richard P. Swenson of DUBLIN has been named chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry, effective July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2004. Swenson earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1979 and did post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan.
· Chris O. Igodan has been named director of the Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster., effective Sept. 1, 2000 through Aug. 31, 2004. Igodan is currently dean and professor of agriculture at the University of Fort Hare, a leading educational institution in South Africa. He earned his Ph.D. in agricultural extension/rural psychology at Ohio State in 1984.
· George S. Pappas has been named chairperson of the Department of Philosophy in the College of Humanities, effective Oct. 1, 2000, through Sept. 30, 2004. Pappas holds master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and is the recipient of a 1998 Exemplary Faculty Award from the College of Humanities.
Reappointments
· William M. Sherman of UPPER ARLINGTON to director of the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, effective July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2004
· David B. Greenberger to chairperson of the Department of Management and Human Resources, effective Oct. 1, 2000, through Sept. 30, 2004

Regional Campus board appointment and reappointments
· Mansfield Board: Jeffrey L. Molyet, Lydia J. Ried, and Paige Squires have been reappointed to three-year terms. Kenneth R. Allen is the student appointee for a one-year term.
· Marion Board: Larry D. Cline, G. Scott Drew, and Thomas K. Jenkins have been reappointed to three-year terms. Gale E. Martin is the student appointee for a one-year term.
· Newark Board: Patsy P. Jones, David E. Railsback and Norman R. Sleight have been reappointed to three-year terms. Kevin Smith is the student appointee for a one-year term.
All appointments are effective July 1, 2000.
Resolution in memoriam
· Tien-yi Li, professor emeritus in the Departments of East Asian Languages and Literatures and History, died March 17, 2000.
Amendments
In amendments to the board's committee appointments for 2000-2001, the board approved the appointment of Tamala Longaberger to replace Zuheir Sofia on the Wexner Center Foundation Board.
The board approved amendments to the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute medical staff bylaws. Changes define the policy to be followed if a member of the medical staff is sanctioned by the Health Care Financing Administration. Other changes include defining associates to the medical staff as licensed allied health professionals and the application process for granting clinical privileges.
Amendments to the rules of the university faculty relating to requirements for honors at graduation were also approved by the board.
