COLUMBUS -- William H. Hall, assistant vice president for student affairs, has been named interim vice president for student affairs at The Ohio State University, effective Aug. 1. Hall will fill the post vacated by David Williams II, who has accepted an appointment as vice chancellor, general counsel and secretary of Vanderbilt University.
In announcing the appointment today (6/28), Ohio State President William E. Kirwan stated, "We are very fortunate to have someone like Bill Hall to step in to this vitally important position. He has developed a national reputation for his innovative programs that focus on the quality of the student experience and he enjoys strong support from faculty, staff and students alike."
Hall, a resident of MOUNT VERNON, joined the university staff in 1977 as director of residence and dining halls, and was named assistant vice president for student affairs in May 1994. In his current capacity, he is responsible for housing, food services and event centers, one of the largest administrative areas on campus with a budget in excess of $60 million. The Office of Student Affairs encompasses campus residence halls, student unions, student life, food service, ID card services, off- campus student services, housing and food services on the regional campuses, and the university's hotel and conference center.
"I am looking forward to serving the university in this new capacity," Hall said. "It's an honor to be named as the leader of such an exceptionally talented staff."
Prior to coming to Ohio State, he held a variety of posts at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., including coordinator of housing business services. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in education from that university and is a graduate of an advanced professional education course for senior military officers at the U. S. Army War College. After three decades of service in an engineering capacity in the Army National Guard, he retired in 1998 as a brigadier general. A national search for David Williams' replacement will begin soon.
