COWS IN THE CITY - Aug. 10. Visit Ohio State's urban farm and see where the cows on Kenny Road live. The Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory will hold a Horticulture and Crop Science Field Day on Thursday (8/10) from 4 to 8 p.m. at the farm at Kenny Road and Lane Avenue. Operated by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, the facility includes the acreage used for horticulture research, a dairy farm that supports 265 cows, 23 acres used for the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation Teaching and Research Facility, and 26 acres of woodland. It's part classroom, part research facility, part visitors center. Visitors may explore the grounds, take tours and visit information booths.

FEELING SPACY? - Aug. 11. Physicist Brian Greene will present "Space and Time since Einstein," on Friday (8/11) at 8 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium. And you won't need a physics degree to understand him. Known as "the new Carl Sagan," Greene will use computer animation to illustrate the dramatic changes in our understanding of space and time over the last century. Greene's book, The Elegant Universe, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and has been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than four months. Greene will be at Ohio State attending the American Physical Society's international meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields, August 9-13.

VROOMING INTO THE FUTURE - Ohio State's "Smokin' Buckeye" continues to amaze engineers and spectators alike as the 2000 Formula Lightning race season gets underway. The hybrid electric car traveled faster than 100 mph last weekend to three first-place finishes at the Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Ind. Universities participating in the race included the University of West Virginia, Notre Dame, University of Oklahoma, Indiana University-PUI, and Bowling Green. Ohio State students design, build and operate an electric drive system for a specially built Indy-style racing chassis to participate in the Formula Lightning competitions, working throughout the academic year to perfect and improve their entries. The "Smokin' Buckeye" and Formula Lightning team next travels to Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats August 16-18. Joined by Brigham Young University and the University of Oklahoma, the Smokin' Buckeye hopes to set a world record for the fastest open-wheeled electric car during Speed Week 2000.
