OSU trustees accept new funds, approve facility names

  COLUMBUS - Seven new named endowed funds have been established with funds received from the beverage pouring rights agreement between the Coca-Cola Company and The Ohio State University. The university's Board of Trustees accepted these and seven other new endowed funds, totaling $4,844,632, at their meeting Friday (11/3).

In addition, the board amended one fund; approved several personnel appointments; emeritus titles and resolutions in memoriam; and approved the creation and/or naming of several facilities.

Named endowed funds - Coca-Cola

· Academic Programs in Diversity Endowment Fund, $1,000,000, for support of diversity-related programs

· The Undergraduate Student Government Endowed Fund, $1,000,000, for support of Undergraduate Student Government

· The Council of Graduate Students Endowed Fund, $584,000, for support of professional and academic development of graduate students

· The Greek Community Endowed Fund, $450,000, for support of the fraternity and sorority community at Ohio State

· The Student Assessment Endowed Fund, $300,000, for support of the Office of Student Affairs Assessment program

· The Inter-Professional Student Council Endowed Fund, $216,000, for support of development of students in professional colleges

· The Study Abroad Endowed Fund, $130,000, for support of Study Abroad programs

Named endowed funds - general

· The Dorothy M. Davis Endowment Fund, $1,000,000, for unrestricted university support, provided by a gift from The William H. Davis, Dorothy M. Davis and William C. Davis Foundation

· The Dr. Roy C. Darlington Legends of Pharmacy Graduate Endowed Fund, $36,532, for support for graduate students in the College of Pharmacy

· The Fred Miller Fund for Excellence, $31,000, for undergraduate student support in the Fisher College of Business, provided by gifts from Fred B. Miller

· The Joel Arnold Scholarship Fund in Pharmacy, $28,100, provided by gifts from family and friends of A. Joel Arnold

· The Judge Alan E. Schwarzwalder Fund in Public Service, $25,000, for support for educational activities promoting participation in public service, provided by gifts from A. Michael Schwarzwalder

· The Schnipke Family Endowment Fund to Support Clinical Trials and Cancer Research, $25,000, provided by a gift from the Schnipke Engraving Company, Inc.

· The Ramona McCarthy Hawkins Scholarship Fund in Pharmacy, $19,000, provided by a gift from Hawkins

The board also approved a change in the description of The James and Annette Hartman and Lester E. Wiley Scholarship Fund.

Personnel-- Appointments

· Deborah Jones Merritt has been named the director of the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy, effective Nov. 4, 2000, through June 30, 2003. She holds a concurrent appointment as the John Deaver Drinko - Baker & Hostetler Chair in Law and is a professor in the College of Law

· Ilee Rhimes, Jr., has been named Chief Information Officer in the Office of Information Technology, effective Nov. 15, 2000. He is currently vice chancellor for information technology and CIO of City Colleges of Chicago.

· Richard M. Bednarski, associate professor of veterinary clinical science, has been reappointed director of the Veterinary Hospital, effective July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2001.

Emeritus Titles

· Frederick P. Miller, professor emeritus, School of Natural Resources, effective Nov. 1, 2000

· Peter W. Pappas, professor emeritus, Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, effective Nov. 1, 2000

· Kenneth J. Waldron, professor emeritus, Department of Mechanical Engineering, effective Nov. 1, 2000

· Eugene J. Watts, associate professor emeritus, Department of History, effective Jan. 1, 2000

Resolution in memoriam

· Willard C. Myser, professor emeritus in the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (formerly Zoology), who died Sept. 15, 2000

Other Business

In other business, the board:

· Presented Charles A. Csuri, professor emeritus of art education and computer and information science, with the Joseph Sullivant Medal, one of Ohio State's highest honors. Csuri, considered to be the "father of computer art," was approved for the award at the trustees' meeting in July. The $10,000 prize is awarded at five-year intervals to recognize notable achievements by alumni or faculty members.

· Approved the creation of The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy. The Glenn Institute will provide students with opportunities to participate in public service initiatives both on and off campus and will stimulate research in public policy by providing opportunities for faculty research, by creating public policy focus groups, and by sponsoring symposia and seminars.

· Approved the creation of a Center for Biostatistics. The center will bring together existing pieces of diverse biostatistical expertise, linking biomedical researchers and biostatisticians, and providing a single, readily identifiable source of expertise for biomedical researchers in the university and throughout Ohio. The center will provide pre- and post-doctoral training in biostatistics and will provide public service and consulting to health care agencies and private health care concerns.

· Approved the naming of the Ohio State University Medical Center Heart and Lung Research Institute as The Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. During her lifetime, Davis was vitally interested in the future of Ohio State, medical research, and higher education. To honor her memory, the William H. Davis, Dorothy M. Davis and William C. Davis Foundation has contributed $10 million toward the operation, programs and endowment of the Heart and Lung facility.

· Approved the naming of the Spirit of Women Park on the Columbus campus as The Chlois G. Ingram Spirit of Women Park. During her lifetime, Ingram had a long-standing relationship with University Hospitals as a "gray lady" volunteer. To honor her memory, the Ingram family has contributed $300,000 toward the construction of a park dedicated to all women who have made a difference in the lives of others.

· Approved the naming of The Ohio State University Band Center as The Joan Zieg Steinbrenner Band Center at Ohio Stadium. Mr. and Mrs. George Steinbrenner of Tampa, Fla., are longtime supporters of Ohio State programs, including the Marching Band, and Mrs. Steinbrenner is an alumna. The couple has donated $1.5 million toward the construction of the new band center.

The board also approved an amendment to the Rules of the University Faculty regarding admission requirements.
