Ohio State gears up for big game against Michigan

Beat Michigan Week activities to raise money for breast cancer research

COLUMBUS -- Students, faculty and staff at The Ohio State University are digging out their walking shoes for the Stefanie Spielman Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, which takes place at 8 p.m. Nov. 16 at Fred Beekman Park on the corner of Lane Avenue and Kenny Road. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is part of Beat Michigan Week 2000, Nov. 15 through 18.

"Last year's event was a great success," said Tracy Stuck, director of Student Activities & Campus Programs at Ohio State. "Hundreds of students, faculty and staff, and central Ohio residents turned out for the event, which raised more than $13,000 for breast cancer research. This year, we hope to do even more."

The event also will provide individuals the chance to learn more about the disease that claims thousands of lives each year, Stuck said. T-shirts and food will be available for a donation the night of the walk. The event, sponsored by Big Bear and United Parcel Service, is open to the public.

The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute was started by Spielman and her husband, former Ohio State football player Chris Spielman. The Spielmans have already raised over $1.5 million for breast cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center. All proceeds from the event will go to the fund.
