Ohio State to house new Soil Contamination Research Institute - Determining how soil contamination happens and how best to clean it up is the focus of a new institute being created at Ohio State. The National Science Foundation has awarded the university $5.8 million over five years to fund an Environmental Molecular Sciences Institute (EMSI), one of only four NSF-funded institutes in the nation. Three others - at Columbia University, Northwestern University and Princeton University - were established in 1998. EMSI co-directors, Samuel Traina, a professor of natural resources, and Patrick Hatcher, a professor of chemistry, will team with university faculty and collaborators at other academic, government and industrial institutions to form the institute. In addition to studying soil pollutants, the Ohio State EMSI also will focus on contaminants in the atmosphere and in water. The first major research symposium for the Ohio State is planned for Earth Day, March 21, 2001. Contact: Samuel Traina, (614) 292-9037
